Abstract:

Health a Disease in Ancient Anatolian Societies examines the health conditions, diseases, and patterns of physical stress experienced by past populations of Anatolia from a paleopathological perspective. By integrating pathological changes observed in human skeletal remains with archaeological evidence, the study explores the complex relationship between disease, trauma, nutrition, lifestyle, and environmental conditions in ancient communities. Skeletal indicators of infectious diseases, traumatic injuries, metabolic disorders, degenerative conditions, and other pathological alterations provide valuable evidence for reconstructing both individual life histories and broader population-level health patterns.Rather than considering pathological lesions solely as indicators of disease, the book approaches them as biological records reflecting the social, economic, environmental, and cultural circumstances in which individuals lived. Particular attention is given to the ways in which dietary practices, daily activities, living conditions, and environmental factors influenced human health. Through the combined evaluation of bioarchaeological and archaeological data, the study contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of health, disease, and human adaptation in ancient Anatolia. In this respect, the book demonstrates the significance of paleopathology for reconstructing the living conditions and health profiles of past societies.
