Abstract
This book focuses on the results of an Archaeological Surface Survey conducted in Karabük on behalf of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, specifically the section on tombs and tombstones. Historical cemeteries/tombstones provide material for research in many fields, including art history, history, and literature. They are historical documents containing important information from religious, cultural, social, and economic perspectives. The study includes 1000 examples of tombstones inventoried from 6 districts and 278 villages of Karabük. These tombstones are evaluated based on their inscription content and ornamentation programs, and the 293-year urban identity of Karabük is revealed through tombstones, ranging from the oldest tombstone (1650) to the latest (1943). The study results show that the districts and villages of Safranbolu possess the best-preserved examples. Tombstones, as primary sources for illuminating local history, should be considered alongside all other components of the city when conducting urban studies. The preservation and transmission of these cultural heritage tombstones to future generations is only possible in this way.
