Abstract

In this work, initiated by the Department of History at Kütahya Dumlupınar University, we aimed to examine the city's history through an interdisciplinary lens. We have presented scholarly studies conducted by experts in the field in chronological order.Spanning a period of millennia, the texts included here—ranging from archaeological remains to archival documents, and from the Sufi poets who shaped our spiritual world to the unforgettable memories of the National Struggle—reveal not only Kütahya’s political history but also its social, cultural, and literary fabric. Topics such as the ancient settlements of Domaniç and Seyitömer Höyük; Kütahya’s status as a *sanjak* (administrative district) in the Ottoman era; the Çavdar Tatars under Germiyanid rule; and the spiritual atmosphere evoked in Sun’ullah Gaybî’s *nutuk* (spiritual discourse) on the theme of "Burak" all contribute to this comprehensive picture. Furthermore, the work offers the reader in-depth insights through subjects such as travelers' impressions of Kütahya, 16th-century *Ahi* lodges and farms, traces of Oghuz tribes in the region, the architectural elegance of Kütahya’s traditional houses, and an analysis of Ottoman provincial administration based on a legal deed (*hüccet*). Simultaneously, topics like the Kütahya branch of the Ottoman Bank, the first sanatorium initiative, the *Kütahya Mecmuası* (Kütahya Journal), the occupations during the National Struggle, the excitement of liberation as reflected in the press, and the inaugural celebration of the August 30th Victory shed light on the social memory of Kütahya in the modern era. The cultural significance of this memory and proposals for keeping the past alive are also addressed in this volume. Furthermore, our ultimate goal is to create a comprehensive resource for both researchers and everyone who holds Kütahya close to their hearts, and to inspire not only readers but also those who will shape Kütahya’s future.
